American Idol Top 24 Recap: Top 12 Guys perform
Mar 01 2011 10:15 pm ET

After weeks of suffering through the somewhat painful audition process, we have finally made it to the first performance show. The viewers are once again put in charge of the fate of the remaining 24 contestants. Tonight the guys will take the stage, while tomorrow is ladies' night. Thursday we’ll find out which 5 guys and which 5 girls the viewers have chosen, along with the judges' two wild card picks. So let’s begin, shall we?

First up tonight we have karaoke host Clint Jun Gamboa singing Stevie Wonder‘s “Superstition”. I’m confused as to why he’d choose this song, as we all know that there will be a Motown week and this is one of the rare freebie weeks where contestants can actually sing whatever they‘d like. ["Supposedly they're getting rid of the theme weeks, but that might be another tall tale from Nigel Lythgoe." - Mike] That being said he did a great job, he had tons of energy and used the stage well. The end showed a range few singers have – very impressive. Steven and Randy call it brilliant, Lopez says his nerves didn’t affect his performance.

Our resident Latin lover Jovany Barreto is up next singing Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be”. Not great, not terrible, but not great. Pretty average and I imagine quite forgettable by the end of the evening. Steven, however, calls it beautiful. Lopez thinks he “did it." Randy calls it like it is, saying that he didn’t bring anything new to the song and it paled in comparison to the original.

Music teacher Jordan Dorsey is up next singing Usher’s “OMG”. He has a lot of energy, but the vocals aren’t on point. Specifically the falsetto was off and he didn’t quite pull it off. At least he picked a contemporary song, but ouch…not so good Jordan. Steven didn’t love it and Lopez agrees and calls him out on not being himself. Randy calls it pitchy and agrees with Lopez.

Next up is Tim Halperin singing “Streetcorner Symphony” by Rob Thomas. It was pretty good, but not overly impressive. Again I‘d have to say the word forgettable comes to mind. Steven says that song doesn’t do him any justice and Lopez agrees. Randy says he’s been much better before, once again saying he didn’t bring anything new to the song.

17-year-old Brett Lowenstern is up singing The Doors' “Light My Fire”. I like his voice, but I’m not sure about the song choice. Better than most so far though, so we’ll see how the rest of the show pans out. Steven loves it, Lopez agrees. Randy sites a few pitch problems, but says he appreciated the performance.

Adam Lambert is next. Oh sorry, I mean James Durbin singing Judas Priest’s “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming”. Wow, this guy can sing! And I mean sing! Pretty cheesy song, but you can‘t argue with that talent and range. Steven says that was “f*#@ing crazy good.” Lopez says she loves the way he performs, that it’s natural and organic. Randy says “this is how you do it”.

Up next is one of my personal favorites, 17 year-old Robbie Rosen, singing Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel”. It didn’t really work, the arrangement wasn’t great and he definitely had some pitch problems. You could see the poor kid was nervous as all get out, I feel for him. Steven calls it beautiful, Lopez agrees, adding that he “feels every single word." Randy disagrees though, saying it was pitchy, and much as I hate to, I must agree with Randy. I can only hope that people remember his performances during Hollywood week and give him another chance, because he’s truly talented and deserves to be in the top 12.

Country crooner Scotty McCreery is up with John Michael Montgomery’s “Letters From Home”. I have to say I’m not much of a country fan, however this kid is great! He should be a huge country star. Such a deep rich voice, just a flawless performance, and at 17-years-old. Steven loves his song choice and calls it beautiful. Lopez and Randy both love it as well.

Up next is Stefano Langone singing “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars. He sounds good. It’s risky to pick such a popular song, but for the most part he pulled it off (except for one bum note toward the end causing Jennifer to give a priceless reaction). All the judges agree that it was a great performance.

Paul McDonald (who?) is next singing “Maggie May” by Rod Stewart. He’s got a quirky Adam Levine vibe going on, and it works for him – he sounds good. Steven says he has a lot of character in his voice. Lopez calls him unique and likes his smile. LOL. Randy also calls him unique and unlike anyone else that’s ever been on the show.

Next up is the over the top, but exceedingly likable, Jacob Lusk singing Dusty Springfield’s “A House is Not a Home”. It’s an almost understated performance for Jacob. That is until the end where he hits the most beautiful high notes of the night. He’s exceptional and I have no doubt we’ll be seeing him again. Steven calls him unbelievable and is almost moved to tears. Lopez compares him to Luther Vandross and Randy agrees.

Last up tonight is another one of my personal favorites: Casey Abrams singing “I Put a Spell on You” by Screaming Jay Hawkins. My god I adore him, he‘s phenomenal! I think he stole the show, what a great performance! Steven loves him as well calling it as good as it gets. Lopez calls him sexy and says she loved it. Randy says “more, more, more”.

So there you have it, our first performance show. Who do you think will make the cut, and who do think will fall by the wayside? Tomorrow we get to do it all over again with the girls. Be sure to check back here for the play by play.

American Idol Live Blog: Top 12 Men Perform
March 1st, 2011 8:02 PM by Hilton Hater

Welcome to THG's first American Idol live blog of season 10. With the top dozen men taking to the stage tonight and singing for your vote, we're here to offer commentary and insight along the way.

Leave comments, refresh often for updates and let's do this...

8:07 Contestants can choose any song they wish, Ryan tells us. Kicking the show off? Clint Jun Gamboa, karaoke host extraordinaire. He chooses "Superstition" and concludes with a scream that would make Steven Tyler proud. He gets two "brilliants," one from Tyler, one from Randy.

Not exactly constructive words from the judges. They're off to a rough start.

Clint Jun Gamboa on StageJordan Dorsey on StageTim Halperin on StageBrett Loewenstern on StageRobbie Rosen on Stage

Scotty McCreery PhotoStefano Langone PhotoPaul McDonald PhotoJacob Lusk PhotoCasey Abrams on Stage

8:14 Jovany Barreto abs alert! Over-played song choice alert! Jovany goes with Edward McCain's "I'll Be." I found it bland. Tyler found it... "Holy shipyards!" J. Lo is "happy" because Barreto "did it." Randy actually says something worthwhile for once, telling Jovany he brought nothing original to the performance. True dat, dawg.

8:18 Jordan Dorsey breaks out some Usher and, OMG, it sounds like... someone trying to sound like Usher. Minus the body and minus the dance moves, that is. Heck, I can shake my shoulders.

The judges are actually critical, although J. Lo compares him to Nat King Cole for some reason. All three disliked it. And Lopez won't stop interrupting Randy.

8:27 You won't believe this, but Tim Halperin says everyone gets along well. The guys over there? They are like his brothers! We aren't buying that for a second, but we might be purchasing stock in Halperin. The singer puts his own touch on a Rob Thomas classic (yes, those exist), and then faces criticism from the judges.

Tyler and J. Lo thinks he's "special," but the latter at least says he has one of the best voices she's ever heard. Yes, ever. Yes, she said that.

8:31 Brett Loewenstern is embracing who he is. That means an attempt at classic rock, apparently, and a version of "Light My Fire." It sounds like a teenager trying to sound hardcore in my view, but the judges can't get enough of the hair flipping, and the personality, and J. Lo tries to make a joke about Beyonce and Loewenstern leaves the stage too early, only to return and tell Ryan "I love you" and I'm already irritated by this guy. He comes across as fake cute, not natural, David Archuleta cute.

8:40 It's time James Durbin to makes like Adam Lambert. He keeps telling us we've got "another thing coming," which leads to the first Steven Tyler curse words of the evening. Was that really the first Judas Priest song in Idol history? Can someone look that up for us?

Certainly a bold statement from Durbin, who raises his fist and eggs on the crowd. This is not someone who fears the spotlight.

8:49 Ryan introduces Robbie Rosen as the "pride of Long Island." Isn't JWOWW from there? She must have been a close second. We're in the arms of an angel for this minute-plus, which just causes me to picture Sarah McLachlan telling us to save the animals.

Tyler and J. Lo love the ballad and it definitely helps Rosen stand out. His heart was very much into the performance. Randy, though, continuing in his attempt to be contrarian, says the notes didn't all connect.

8:57 Man, Scotty McCreery's voice is deeper than a Maya Angelou poem (no? How about the Phillies starting rotation?). For non-country lovers, this is "Letters From Home" by John Michael Montgomery. Tyler is right that it's the perfect song choice, while J. Lo gushes over the rendition. That's been a rarity tonight, I know. Scotty doesn't even know what to say when Ryan asks for his reaction.

9:01 Stefano Langone makes the mistake of choosing one of the most played songs on the radio, "Just the Way You are." He mixes it up a bit, holding on to a few notes and showcasing his range, but I never think a contestant should choose a song everyone can instantly compare to the original. Or hear the next morning on their drive to work. Hard to stand out that way.

Still, a solid performance of the Bruno Mars single. Ryan proceeds to put Stefano on the spot, who dedicates it to "all the ladies out there." Smooth.

9:10 Paul McDonald challenges Durbin for most confident audition. He goes with a Rod Stewart classic and sounds very much like the music icon, encouraging the crowd to clap along. Doesn't much different than the original, but McDonald clearly has talent. I like how he wandered around the stage, in his own universe.

9:14 Ryan refers to Jacob Lusk as "understated." Oh, Ryan. Another soulful performance, great runs, but, excuse me, Steven? Did you just say "divine intervention" brought Lusk here? And did J. Lo really follow that up by saying "Luther Vandross is gone... but now we have you."

Sorry, Charlie Sheen, but the judges have clearly decided you won't be the WINNER on American Idol. I like Lusk a lot, but this is an awful lot of praise to heap on someone so early in the competition.

9:23 Casey Abrams is putting a spell on us. A really intense spell. The guy is certainly putting it all out there, growling into the mic until ending on a literal high note, really getting into the spirit. I love it. Standing ovation. Tyler says it was as "good as it gets." J. Lo says he's "sexy" and will "redefine" the whole thing. Wait... will it no longer be a singing competition?!? How will Randy refer to it then?!?

My top 5 from the evening:

1. James Durbin
2. Jacob Lusk
3. Casey Abrams
4. Scotty McCreery
5. Paul McDonald

C'est horrible la nouvelle scène. Hor-ri-ble. Ça me distrait beaucoup trop les dix milles écrans et prises de vues!!! Y'auraient tellement dû garder ça simple, ça serait tellement plus agréable pour les yeux.
