FOX's 'American Band' Sets Its Premiere
Talent search will debut on Oct. 19

July 31, 2007
'So You Think You Can Dance' judge Nigel Lythgoe
'So You Think You Can Dance' judge Nigel Lythgoe
Left off the list when FOX announced its fall premiere dates earlier this month, "The Next Great American Band" will launch in October.

The talent search, from those genre masters at 19 Entertainment, will premiere on Friday, Oct. 19 with a two-hour episode presumably including audition footage. "The Next Great American Band" (FOX keeps calling that a working title) will then move into its regular 8 p.m. hour-long format beginning the next week.

Hundreds of bands from around the country auditioned for the show, with applicants raising from hip-hop ensembles to country groups. A set of judges will narrow the hopefuls down to 10 semifinalists, at which point the American people will take on voting responsibilities, just as they do on "Idol."

Also like "Idol," each week the contestants will perform within an established genre, though unlike "Idol" the bands will have the option of either doing original music or covers. The show's finale will pit three bands against each other in a battle of the band for a contract with 19 Recordings.

Simon Fuller, Nigel Lythgoe, Ken Warwick and Cecile Frot-Coutaz will executive produce. FOX promises upcoming announcements for the show's judges and host.

Going to Vegas for "Next Great American Band"!

I posted a link in the OT section a while ago to vote for my band in a competition with the local Fox station, well we won and performed on our local Fox station last Thurs.. We finally found out some more details of our trip last night.

We are getting a paid trip to Vegas to audition in front of the producers of the new reality show "The Next Great American Band". the Fox travel guy called us last night and we'll be going to Vegas from Aug. 19th - 23rd.

There will be 40 bands going to Vegas, us and 9 other bands automatically got to skip the auditions in L.A. and go straight to Vegas. Out of all the bands that audition in L.A. only 30 will be selected to go to Vegas making it 40 in total. They said if we get past the 2nd round we might end up staying til Aug. 26th.

I'm super excited just to get a paid trip to Vegas since I've never been there before, we're really trying to work on a couple songs and get them nailed. We were in the studio rehearsing last night with the guy that is doing all of our recordings, he's got a lot of experience with music on television, played keys on tour with the Neville brothers for a while and so on...so he's helping us to shorten some our songs for tv and work out any conflicting things going on within them.

Just thought I'd share my good news with my fellow TB brethren.

p.s. Here's our website and myspace page......

www.myspace.com/dovagroverocks
www.dovagrove.com

and here's a link to the video where we played on our local Fox station after winning.......and yes the guy messed up our name.

Ian Dickson called to US to judge bands
Article from: The Courier-Mail

August 15, 2007 12:00am

http://www.news.com.au/common/imagedata/0,,5610925,00.gif

IAN Dickson's frequent flyer points are getting a boost as he heads to Las Vegas today to start work as judge on new US show The Next Great American Band.
The program's producer and founder of the Idol concept, Simon Cowell, handpicked Dicko.

It could be the biggest career move yet for the 44-year-old.

The next few months will be very hectic for Dicko.

He returns to Australia on August 25 to join judges on Australian Idol.

In October, Dicko will film Idol on a Sunday and Monday, head to Los Angeles for The Next Great American Band on Tuesday morning, and return on Friday in time for the next week's Idol.

Dicko chuffed to see Brit bands
Article from: The Courier-Mail

August 07, 2007 12:00am

AS Australia cringed through a fresh batch of karaoke wannabes, Australian Idol judge Ian "Dicko" Dickson was busy enjoying some real rock 'n' roll at Splendour in the Grass.
Dicko and family spent Saturday together, but he and wife Mel got in touch with their Pommie roots by dancing to Arctic Monkeys and Bloc Party.

Dicko still loves his Brit bands and was equally chuffed to see stirring Birmingham rockers Editors on Saturday.

"They're Brummies like me and remind me a lot of Joy Division," Dicko tells Qconfidential.

It was a noisy way to relax, but the former record exec reckons Splendour was the quiet before the storm of Australian Idol.

"My life is over," he jokes.

Maybe Dicko was doing research at Splendour for his next gig.

He's just signed on for the new US series The Next Great American Band and will juggle his time between here and LA.

C.F. native to be in reality music show
By JON ERICSON, Courier Staff Writer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- A Cedar Falls native has a shot at competing in a new Fox television show from the producers of American Idol.

http://images.townnews.com/wcfcourier.com/content/articles/2007/08/09/news/metro/793f9b2b295a623686257332004f5762.jpg
Jim Egli, third from right, fronts Dova Grove, which will compete in a music competition on Fox TV later this year.

Joe Egli fronts the band Dova Grove, which will be a competitor in an American Idol spinoff on Fox that will premiere in October. The show has a working title of "The Next Great American Band."

Dova Grove is among 40 bands that will travel to Las Vegas this month to perform before judges and try to make the cut to be on the show. The band made it that far by winning a competition put on by the Memphis Fox affiliate. The winner was chosen by an Internet vote.

The opportunity almost passed Egli and Dova Grove by. The band's drummer saw an advertisement the day before entries were due. Egli filled out the application, found a recording of a live performance a band family member had made and submitted it 10 minutes before the deadline.

Egli started teaching himself how to play guitar while pursuing an undergraduate degree at Winona State University in Minnesota. He was writing songs and started playing with a band, "Barefoot Compadres," while earning a graduate degree at the University of Northern Iowa.

Two years ago he moved to Memphis to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology. Six months after arriving there, Dova Grove was born as the six members came together after meeting through mutual friends.

Egli said the background of the band members is eclectic.

"We have a lot of guys who grew up in Mississippi. They were raised on Southern rock and blues. I grew up on acoustic guitar and alternative rock. The sax player is from Atlanta and he's been more into jazz and R and B," Egli said.

As for the resulting sound, Egli said it's hard to put a label on it.

"It's kind of bluesy, kind of rocky, kind of jazzy and jam bandy," Egli said.

All band members are either employed or go to school full time, so their opportunities to play and practice are limited. They play from three to six shows per month, and get one night per week to practice.

"Considering we don't have a CD out and we haven't been together that long, we've developed a pretty good following," Egli said. "We do this part time, but we seem to have a lot of success with it. We have fun and try to set the tone."

The band has called in some outside help to gear up for the competition. They are working with a Memphis-based musician who has played with the Neville brothers to help with their live performances and transitions between songs.

In the Las Vegas performances, Egli said the band will play for a panel of judges.

"Considering we're only playing for a handful of people and they will all be scrutinizing us, it will be kind of nerve wracking, but I think we're up for it," Egli said.

The Next Great American Band: First Finalist Band Revealed?

For the latest American Band news, subscribe to our RSS feed or email newsletter. Email this Article to a Friend

October 12, 2007

In an e-mail sent out last night, Detroit rock band The Muggs claimed that they were indeed one of the top 12 bands chosen as finalists on FOX's upcoming reality series The Next Great American Band.  The finalists for American Band have been shrouded in secrecy for some time and, despite false reports on various websites, nothing has been confirmed.  Until now, perhaps.  The Muggs, if their e-mail is true (and there's no reason to lie at this point), are the first revealed finalist.  The Detroit rock trio specialize in blues based hard rock and have been a staple of the Detroit music scene for years.

When I first read this story, I had to be skeptical.  There has been a lot of noise out there from bands claiming to be finalists on American Band, and most of it has been dubious.  This might also be a lie, but when I started doing some research on The Muggs, it started to look legit.  These guys are well respected and, when I heard some of their stuff, I became legitimately excited to see them on American Band.  Here's a YouTube clip form one of their performances.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t-uwr__3xU&eurl=

That's some sweet 70's/blues/hard rock.  I'm not all too familiar with the recent Detroit music scene, except for the emergence of The White Stripes, one of my favorite bands.  The Muggs, in this small sample, sound like early White Stripes.  American Band debuts next Friday, but considering that it's only airing once a week (for now, at least) there will surely be a few episodes devoted solely to auditions.  It's unclear whether FOX will announce the top 12 bands, or whether they'll simply be revealed in one of the episodes.

Again, take this with a grain of salt.  It appears to be somewhat legit, but you never know with these things.

FOX Searches for ‘The Next Great American Band’
Related: American Idol,  FOX,  Music,  Prime Time,  Reality,  Gossip,  Ratings,  Rumors

FOX LogoNo one, not even FOX executives, could have predicted the outrageous success of American Idol. As far as reality shows go, Idol is the winner with viewers. Desperate to re-capture the same ratings success with reality, FOX keeps trying new reality ideas. On the Lot, which had a format very similar to Idol and focused on finding America’s next great director, didn’t sizzle over the summer. But the network still has high hopes for the much-touted new fall series, The Next Great American Band. And though the show isn’t even scheduled to premiere until its October 19 two-hour extravaganza, the Internet leaks have long since started. The problem with the leaks is the same problem which plagues the whole of the Internet: what information can be believed, and what can’t?

Read More | Idol Mania

John Rzeznik (The Goo Goo Dolls), Sheila E. and Aussie Ian “Dicko” Dickson (Australian Idol) will be the judges, with Dominic Bowden (New Zealand Idol) will host. Now, that’s true. The networked “leaked” that information of its own accord. The other leaks? Those are a little harder to track.

The auditions will be featured on the October 19 premiere, with hopeful bands being narrowed down to only twelve (or ten, depending on what you read) semifinalists. In classic Idol format, the competing bands will them perform live each week. Viewers will vote on their favorites. At the end, the winning bands (three final groups) will compete for a contract with 19 Recordings. The trouble is, information is already all over the Internet discussing the fate of various bands. Many anonymous fans have posted words suggested that this band or that has made it to the semifinals…still weeks before the show is scheduled to hit the airwaves. And therein lies the problem. In some cases, the posts are completely false – bands trying to build up their own names by linking themselves erroneously to the show. But in other cases? Could it be possible that viable information is already leaking out? For years, fans have glanced upon American Idol with a dubious eye. There have been leaks in the past, and some Web sites track the fate of contestants before such has even been voted upon. It’s hard to trust reality in a world where everything is scrïpted on TV, and harder still to trust when voting malfunctions (Clay Aiken) have raised questions and concerns about the viability of Idol in the past.

The moral of the story? Don’t believe the leaks…but do pay attention. They can’t all be fake. But if FOX has anything to say about it, the network will quickly stop all real information that might be finding its way to the Web – so read quickly, and wait until October 19 to find out what the truth actually is.

Fox sent out just a half-hour of highlights from its two-hour opener for "The Next Great American Band," so I haven't seen the host's patter, product placements and other fluff that pads "American Idol." The highlights, though, look and sound promising.

The supersize debut episode plops several dozen bands - pop, soul, death-metal, bluegrass, newgrass, you name it - onto a helipad outside Las Vegas, where they audition with both an original and a cover. At least a dozen of them really rock.

Who'd have thought a tween boy band called Light of Doom, which cites as its influences "ninjas, boobs and explosions," would sound so good? Or that Denver & the Mile-High Orchestra, a swing outfit, would kill with that Monkees chestnut, "I'm a Believer"?

I could have done without the cardboard horse's head, if that's what it was, worn by the leader of the Dirty Marmaduke Flute Squad, but maybe that's just me.

Judges Sheila E., John Rzeznik (the Goo Goo Dolls) and Ian "Dicko" Dickson ("Australian Idol") keep the chit-chat to a minimum, at least in the highlight reel.

The hourlong series, hosted by cutie-pie Dominic Bowden ("New Zealand Idol"), will air weekly at 8 p.m. EDT Friday, with the finale scheduled for Dec. 21.

Meet Dominic Bowden Next Great American Band Host

Who is Dominic Bowden? Did you know that he drank his own urine on national television, and loves to make big romantic gestures? Some of you may have heard that his desire for a tan left him red-faced at his interview, but did you know his earlier efforts at tanning left him orange faced? Read on for more on the new host of The Next Great American Band.

Dominic Bowden, or Dom as we know him here in kiwiland, is a regular fixture on New Zealand television. He is currently one of New Zealand's highest profile presenters. So high profile that we’re looking forward to have a wee break from the omnipresent Dom who is currently on our screens fronting the first (and hopefully last) season of the kiwi version of Are You Smarter Than a 10 Year Old? (known in the U.S. as Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?). Dominic is also the face (and voice and body for TVNZ's TVNZ OnDemand and conducts the virtual tour of the site.

The facts:

   * His full name is Dominic Joseph Bowden, but most people call him Dom.
   * Uberskinny Dominic towers over American Idol shortie Ryan Seacrest and is thought to be 6’4”, although some reports say he is 6’2”
   * Dom is a 30 year old Sagittarian born 15 December 1976

Dominic’s career
Dominic is highly ambitious and career focused. Dom has a reputation for being charming, polite and very hard working. His career started in New Zealand however he moved to Sydney, Australia for a period to further his career before returning to New Zealand. He followed girlfriend Claire Robbie (now his fiancee) to Shanghai and worked there for a few months.

Dom has worked in both radio and television for many years as well as emceeing corporate events and awards ceremonies. His career took off in 2004 when he started hosting New Zealand Idol.

His first television role was as the host of children’s television show Squirt in 1999 which he co-hosted with an animated penguin. He later hosted television music show, Space with the zany Jaquie Brown. Dominic has also hosted his own national radio show on More FM, and has interviewed many of the biggest stars in music and entertainment including Robbie Williams, Bon Jovi, Will Smith and Keanu Reeves.

Reality Television

   * Dominic is best known for hosting three seasons of NZ Idol from 2004-2006. He gained instant popularity, not only for his smooth television delivery, but also for keeping the live audience entertained.
   * More recently Dominic hosted Pop’s Ultimate Star where the so-called best of the best competed against each other for $50,000, a car and the chance to wear tacky costumes and sing songs for which they were woefully unsuited. Although Dom continued to be a smooth and polished presenter, he appeared to lose his personality and seemed to be going through the motions – perhaps because he already knew he had bigger opportunities awaiting him in L.A.?
   * Dominic Bowden was a contestant on the first season of Celebrity Treasure Island, a Survivor type contest, but was quickly eliminated from the show.
   * Dom appeared in cringe-worthy Shock Treatment, a travel show where celebrities think they will be fronting a luxury travel show and instead find themselves sent to a boot camp where they have to rough it for a few days and humiliate themselves in the name pf personal growth. The highlight was one celebrity getting an enema on television. In the episode featuring Dominic he travelled to India and drank his own urine. Euwwww!
   * Dominic has also hosted reality game show Finding J. Smith and other very forgettable shows.

Dominic’s Love Life
Charming Dominic is said to have an eye for the ladies, and is currently engaged to beautiful television reporter Claire Robbie.

Ironically, in a 2006 interview Dominic said that long-distance relationships didn’t work for him and Claire and that he had decided to stop putting his career first and instead make Claire his top priority.

I realised that I could go 10 years forging out an amazing career for myself but I would be by myself. I needed to put Claire first.

Claire was able to join Dominic in LA for two weeks to help him settle in as they had both planned to holiday at that time, but will return to New Zealand while Dominic is working in LA for the filming of The Next Great American Band.

Claire Robbie has been working hard to establish herself in television. She had a small part in New Zealand’s longest running soap opera Shortland Street playing the part of Courtney Williams and has pursued acting work alongside her political studies degree. She has worked a variety of jobs and travelled to Asia for a working holiday. More recently Claire joined TV3 as a reporter for their Nightline program.

The pair got engaged in early 2006 after an on-again off-again romance and planned to marry in early 2007, however this has not yet happened. Dominic proposed in their Bangkok hotel room amid hundreds of red rose petals to the music of Queen’s CD You’re My Best Friend and a bottle of Dom Perignon.

The result was an interview in NZ Woman's Weekly which included several soft porn shots of Dominic and Claire frolicking on the beach.

Trivia & Gossip
Like many aspiring models and television stars, Dominic Bowden entered the Cleo Bachelor of the Year contest, and was a finalist in the year 2000 competition. Other memorable finalists include Shortland St actors David Wikaira-Paul and Ben Mitchell.

Fair skinned Dominic Bowden appears to like the idea of getting a tan. During one season of NZ Idol, Dominic was nickname "Fanta Face" for the orange colour of his fake tan. When he travelled to L.A. for his audition for Next Great American Band, he hoped to get a bit of time in the sun and underestimated the potency of the sun's rays. He turned up to the audition red-faced after getting sunburned. Fortunately for Dominic, the same thing happened to American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, and everyone laughed about it.

Dominic is a very conservative dresser, and sometimes wears glasses. He is said to be looking for a stylist in L.A.

Although, it was eventually smoothed over, Dominic created a sensation when he pulled out of reality television show Intrepid Journeys hours before the plane was due to leave, after winning the coveted presenting role on Next Great American Band.

Dom is a non-smoker.

'The Next Great American Band’ gives bands a shot at ‘Idol’ fame

There’s sheer bravado in the title of Fox’s ‘‘The Next Great American Band.’’ But the network that gave us ‘‘American Idol’’ is primly cautious about whether it’s found another hit talent show.

Debuting 8 p.m. today, ‘‘American Band’’ boasts an impressive group of finalists ranging from heavy metal to soul to bluegrass, and it’s from the same producers behind ‘‘American Idol.’’

But are audiences ready for what Johnny Rzeznik, the lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls and a judge on the new venture, describes as ‘‘basically like a big battle of the bands’’?

‘‘You just have to cross your fingers,’’ said Mike Darnell, Fox’s president for alternative entertainment. The No. 1 status of ‘‘American Idol,’’ he said, ‘‘doesn’t necessarily translate to the band show. . . . You can’t compare anything to ‘American Idol.’ ’’
