Mission’s Idol comes home

By Kristine Thiessen and Carol Aun
Mission Record

Aug 23 2007

This Saturday has been decreed Carly Rae Jepsen Day, in honour of the charming girl with the sultry voice who recently achieved a coveted top four spot in Canadian Idol.

Jepsen comes home to Mission for the first time since becoming a finalist over two months ago. She will treat her hometown to a performance at the Fraser River Heritage Park Saturday morning.

After Jepsen was deemed safe from elimination Tuesday evening, Mayor James Atebe phoned her family to congratulate them.

“I asked them to convey congratulations and best wishes to Carly whenever they talk to her,” he said.

Atebe said he has greatly enjoyed following her progression on the nation-wide competition.

“I am quite proud of her performance and the work she’s accomplished for herself, the community, and the youth. She’s handled herself really well, and represented the community really well,” he said.

“She’s a great ambassador for the youth of our community.”

It seems everyone is looking forward to seeing her, said Jepsen’s brother, Colin, who has been busy helping plan the event. Supporters have offered to make brochures and put up posters encouraging everyone to show their support for Mission’s Idol this weekend.

“We’ve been getting 15 to 20 messages each day to see what’s going on with my sister,” said Colin. “There’s so much support, even from people I haven’t spoken to in years.”

Jepsen will be flying into Vancouver on Thursday and will be busy with media interviews all day Friday. Colin doesn’t expect to see his sister until later in the evening.

“I haven’t seen her in two and a half months, since she’s been in Toronto,” said Jepsen’s older brother.

While family and friends are eager to greet her, they also plan to give her time to rest, as the next three weeks are expected to be Jepsen’s busiest.

“We’ll have a home cooked meal . . . and Carly will probably be in bed by 11 p.m.,” said Colin, noting Jepsen will have to prepare for her mini concert at the park the next day, and willl be whisked back to Toronto shortly after that.

The concert is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fraser River Heritage Park, and there will be an autograph session after that.

Residents are encouraged to support Jepsen at her perwformance this weekend and put Mission on display.

“Let’s give Carly a very resounding homecoming,” said Atebe. “We need to show that she’s got our community’s support.”

All final four contestants are visiting their hometowns, flying in Thursday evening. Jepsen is left to compete with Jaydee Bixby, Dwight d’Eon, and Brian Melo for the affection and loyalty of voters.

Carly's confidence stronger than ever

Aug 24 2007

For the first time, Mission singing sensation Carly Rae Jepsen believes she actually has a shot at winning Canadian Idol.

The 21-year-old waitress made the top four finalists on Tuesday night.

“It’s unreal,” she said in her chirpy voice Friday morning, back home for Carly Rae Day and a concert in Mission Saturday between 11 a.m. and noon at Fraser River Heritage Park.

“Everyday it’s becoming more and more real that people watch the show.”

What she finds even harder to come to grips with is her new-found celebrity status and people recognizing her in the street.

“It’s a bit of a shocker when people recognize me. I’m sure it can’t last long!”

What also amazes her is the support she has across Canada.

“It’s probably the most amazing thing I’ve witnessed in my life. People staying up late at night to vote and putting in that effort,” she said.

“I wish I could go around to each one of them and tell them how wonderful they’ve made my life.”

But Jepsen is no dreamer.

She knows she could be the one packing her bags and flying home next week.

“Tuesday night is like lottery night,” she said.

“You go out there and it’s out of your control, but whatever the public decides Canada can’t go wrong at this stage. I’m happy to be around and love being involved in this.”

Of all the big-name performers that have worked with the Idols so far, Jepsen said grammy winner and the first American Idol Kelly Clarkson is one of her favourites.

“She is unbelievably talented and she is very down to earth,” said Jepsen, admitting despite her best attempts she still gets star-struck.

As for being the only girl left in the competition, Jepsen is not bothered.

“They gang up on me!” she jokes, referring to Brian Melo, Jaydee Bixby and Dwight D’eon.

“No, the boys are sweet and they’re adorable and help me carry the bags. We get along really well.”

Jepsen was shocked when Abbotsford contestant Greg Neufeld was eliminated a couple of weeks ago. She was in the bottom three with him.

“We were all very shocked. I was especially shocked. I thought that was the night I would go home.”

Next week, when the Idols work with music legend Paul Anka, Jepsen promises viewers will see something a little different from her performance – a playful song complimented by a soulful ballad “that means a lot to me.”

“I always like to deliver something a little different.”

The nerves still get to Jepsen at times. Some nights she is “as cool as a cucumber and I completely enjoy myself.”

On others, “It will hit me how badly I do want to do well.”

Regardless of whether she advances to the top three and goes on to win, Jepsen is determined to make a solid career for herself.

“I think the real test comes when it’s [the competition] is over,” she said.

“It’s up to each individual to run with it the best they can. There’s never been a question about what I wanted to do. This is the first year of my life I thought it might be possible.”

Facing the judges each night in front of a live studio audience and millions of viewers across Canada has thickened Jepsen’s skin. She can handle any criticism when it comes her way, which is a change from when she burst into tears on stage at the beginning.

“That’s the most embarrassing thing, but I think well, I’ve already embarrassed myself so it took the pressure off,” she said, admitting she has definitely changed since her journey on the show began.

Jepsen credits her family, who she hasn’t seen in two months, for keeping her grounded and keeps in touch with them as often as possible.

She is especially proud of her little sister Katie, 15, for her support.

Even now, when she knows she has a good chance of advancing in the competition, Jepsen still pinches herself to make sure it’s real.

“There have been times, when I’m sitting alone for a minute and I say, Carly Rae, can you believe what a twist your life has taken? I can’t believe that.”

Music a family tradition for Canadian Idol wannabe
Peter Birnie, Vancouver Sun
Published: Friday, August 24, 2007

Carly Rae Jepsen was seven-years-old, and thrilled to bits. Long before the pretty young woman from Mission had made it to the final four on Canadian Idol, she and her father, school principal Larry Jepsen, loved to sing together, with dad on guitar.

When he suggested to the little girl that they take to the stage in a talent show at Hatzic Lake, Carly couldn't wait.

"We sang Beauty and the Beast and Eternal Flame [by the Bangles]," says Jepsen, "and I remember not recognizing my father because I had never seen him nervous before.

Dad was turning a lighter shade of pale, and didn't want to be in the spotlight.

"So I'm standing in the spotlight by myself," Carly recalls, "and the weirdest thing is that I wasn't nervous. I was just so excited, and when I sang the song and it was done, there was a moment of silence when I thought, 'Maybe there's nobody out there.'"

Then came the applause, which Carly recalls as being both shocking and scary.

"But it was, at the same time, so exhilarating. I was like, 'That was probably the best feeling I've ever had. Let's do more of that.'"

And so she did.

Now 21, Jepsen is close to becoming the latest young singer to take the top title on Canadian Idol.

On Monday night, she and the other three finalists (Jaydee Bixby from Alberta, Brian Melo of Ontario and Nova Scotia's Dwight d'Eon) will each sing a couple of old standards -- Jepsen can only reveal that one of her selections is slower, "and one is more fun and playful and Marilyn Monroe-style."

On Tuesday night, they'll all join in paying tribute to celebrity guest Paul Anka, perhaps the first true Canadian idol. Jepsen will have no trouble handling the sweet sounds of an Anka song, especially since she recently dazzled the Idol audience with her rendition of Killer Queen, perhaps one of the most difficult songs in the Queen repertoire.

"As much as I know the classic Queen songs that I think everyone knows," she says, "I was not familiar with that song until the week of performance. I had three ballads picked out and someone was playing [Killer Queen], and it was just 'Scratch that, I have to do this song.'"

Carly's mother wasn't surprised at the choice. Alexandra Lanzarotta fondly recalls the musical skits little Carly would perform in the living room.

"She would take a song and interpret it in her own unique way," says Mom. "She'd come out, and we'd have to sit on the couch [and] be ready; she'd have the costumes and do a whole repertoire of song and dance and movement and action."

Although her parents split when Carly was three, Lanzarotta describes the best of blended homes, where divorce doesn't mean much more to a child than getting to have two sets of parents.

"We all lived in Mission, not very far from each other," she explains, "so really, all that changed was that the sports gear travelled back and forth."

Lanzarotta's own father had been in a band, and her brother still is, so both homes were filled with music. All four of Carly's parents are also educators.

"Unfortunately for Carly and her brother," says Mom, "she's surrounded by teachers and vice-principals and principals. Growing up, you couldn't pretend the dog ate your homework -- too many people on your case."

On Saturday, her daughter will be honoured with Carly Rae Jepsen Day in Mission.

"It's the weirdest thing I've ever heard," Carly says with a laugh, "but it's very flattering. I can't imagine what anyone will do, or why it's been declared. But it'd definitely a sweet thing for someone to have come up with."

That someone is Mission Mayor James Atebe, who pushed for the declaration by city council. Carly will perform and sign autographs from 11 a.m. to noon at Fraser River Heritage Park, off Fifth Avenue east of Stave Lake Street.

While the performer will offer a couple of cover songs, Carly's mom is most pleased that the crowd will also get a chance to hear young Jepsen sing some of her own works.

"To me, her own music is her real strength," says Lanzarotta. "It's unique, it's different, it's catchy, and I'd like to see her be able to do some of her own stuff and get it out there."

Jepsen agrees that the Canadian Idol policy of only allowing its contestants to perform cover songs is the best way for the TV audience to be able to judge a singer's talents. Nevertheless, the singer can't wait for the day when she and her band (name pending because they only formed just before she began the Idol rocket ride) can let loose with some Carly Rae Jepsen originals.

"I know that I don't want to come across as anything but what I am, and I know that this year, efforts are being made to support the uniqueness of each artist."
