Swimming champ Michael Phelps smokes from a bong during a weekend filled with smoking weed and chugging booze, reports UK’s News Of The World.

“You could tell Michael had smoked before,” the paper’s source revealed. “He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to do. He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits. Michael ended up getting a little paranoid, though, because before too long he looked like he was nervous and ran out of the place.”

The 23-year-old Olympic champion’s team reportedly tried to bribe NOTW not to run this bong picture because the Olympic champion could potentially lose all of his endorsement deals. Phelps has won a record 14 gold medals.

Phelps apologizes for photo with marijuana pipe

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Ticker)—Michael Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at last summer’s Beijing Olympics, has apologized for his “regrettable” behavior after a photo in a British tabloid showed the swimmer smoking marijuana.

The 23-year-old Phelps issued a statement Sunday in which he did not dispute the authenticity of the photo, which was published by the News of the World.

“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,” Phelps said in the statement. “I’m 23 years old, and despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public - it will not happen again.”

According to the News of the World, the photo of Phelps was taken during a party last November at the University of South Carolina.

Sporting a backward baseball cap and a white T-shirt, Phelps was photographed inhaling from a large pipe. Although Phelps did not specifically admit to smoking marijuana, his apology prompted a swift response from the United States Olympic Committee.

“We are disappointed in the behavior recently exhibited by Michael Phelps,” the USOC said in a statement. “Michael is a role model, and he is well aware of the responsibilities and accountability that come with setting a positive example for others, particularly young people.

“In this instance, regrettably, he failed to fulfill those responsibilities.”

The party at South Carolina took place three months after the Beijing Games, where Phelps broke Mark Spitz’s record for the most gold medals won at a single Olympics. Phelps has 14 career gold medals, also a record.

Phelps never has tested positive for a banned substance, and the USOC indicated it would not punish the Olympic hero.

“Michael has acknowledged that he made a mistake and apologized for his actions,” the USOC said. “We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the type of example we all expect from a great Olympic champion.”

This is not the first time that Phelps has had a troubling incident coming in the wake of the Olympics, getting arrested for driving under the influence at the age of 19 in Maryland in November 2004. The episode came only a few months after he captured six golds and eight medals in Athens.

While marijuana is considered a more serious drug than alcohol in the eyes of the World Anti-Doping Agency, Phelps does not figure to get into any trouble with the international organization due to the fact that he did not test positive for the substance during competition.

Phelps was known to be on a break from training when the latest incident occurred. He is now back in the pool as he prepares for the World Championships in Rome during the summer.

Prior to that, Phelps is expected to make his first competitive appearance since the Olympics at an event in Austin, Texas in March.

While the incident will probably not have a serious effect on his swimming, Phelps’ infamous picture could cost the swimmer some of his very rich endorsements. Visa, Mazda, Kellogg’s and Speedo are among the companies associated with Phelps.
