Pirate Master Contestant Cheryl Kosewicz Dead From Apparent Suicide
On Saturday, July 28, a source told Reality TV Magazine that Pirate Master contestant Cheryl Kosewicz had passed away. The source told Reality TV Magazine that Kosewicz committed suicide. While the source did not give a reason for the suicide, the source did specifically note that Pirate Master had recently been pulled by CBS and that Kosewicz’s boyfriend passed away about a month and a half ago.
While some Pirate Master cast members have been posting on MySpace about Cheryl Kosewicz’s death and fans have been posting their condolences to Cheryl’s family since Saturday, Reality TV Magazine could find no media reports in Kosewicz’s hometown to back up the story. However, earlier today, KOLO 8 News confirmed that Cheryl Kosewicz was found dead in her home on Friday. KOLO 8 reports that officials told them that the death is believed to be a suicide but is still under investigation.
According to her CBS bio, Cheryl Kosewicz was born on November 11, 1971 and was raised on a farm in Grand Coulee, WA. Cheryl Kosewicz and her family lived off the land and their only store purchases were paper products. During high school, Cheryl Kosewicz was class president and graduated as valedictorian. Cheryl Kosewicz attended college at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on a basketball scholarship. Cheryl Kosewicz received a law degree from Northwestern School of Law in Portland, and she was employed as a deputy district attorney in Reno, Nevada.
On a MySpace.com page apparently belonging to Cheryl Kosewicz, she mentioned the love of her life Ryan O’Neil, who recently passed away. An online obituary reveals that Ryan O’Neil was a heavy equipment operator, who died on June 12, 2007 at the age of 26.
As pointed out by the source that contacted Reality TV Magazine, the news of Cheryl Kosewicz’s death comes less than a week after CBS pulled Pirate Master from the air. On July 23, CBS announced that Pirate Master would be replaced in its Tuesday night time slot by 48 Hours Mystery and that the remaining five episodes of Pirate Master would be streamed online.
Based on comments made on MySpace.com, the show’s cancellation did not sit well with several Pirate Master cast members including Cheryl. On July 25, Cheryl K(osewicz) posted the following about the cancellation on another cast members MySpace page, “What a bunch of bullsh*t about CBS, huh? All of our time, efforts and committment for what? For CBS to f**k it up. Oh well, on to the next one. No matter what happens good luck and be well! Ck”
In a June 28 comment on the same fellow cast member’s MySpace, Cheryl K(osewicz) made another post in relation to the Pirate Master show. Cheryl K(osewicz) posted “Truthfully, I've lost the strong Cherl and I'm just floating around lost. And this frik'n show doesn't help because it was such a contention between Ryan and I and plus its not getting good reviews.....then I made National Enquirer today so I'm just hitting it big....the hits keep on coming. Sorry you couldn't make it to Vegas. It was a blast. Lets plan another trip in August - for one of the last shows....what do you think?”
If Cheyrl Kosewicz’s death is confirmed to be a suicide, then it would mark the second time that a participant on a Mark Burnett reality TV series has committed suicide. Najai Turpin, who was a boxer on The Contender, committed suicide back in February of 2005 before the reality series started airing.
When Cheryl Kosewicz was set adrift on the fourth episode of Pirate Master, she said said “I didn’t bid for the pardon. I just felt that if they don’t want me here, then I’m going to go, and to be able to say that I didn’t succumb to the backstabbing and lying makes me a better person, and I’m so glad I did it.” From the many tributes and messages that are now starting to appear on MySpace.com and various Internet message boards, it's evident that Cheryl Kosewicz touched many and will be deeply missed by fans, family, friends, and her Pirate Master castmates.
