Theresa Sokyrka, the Saskatoon singer who captured hearts on Canadian Idol last summer, has captured top spot on the charts.
According to retail sales figures released by Soundscan Wednesday, These Old Charms was the No. 1 selling album in Saskatchewan last week.
Selling 11,225 units since its release April 26, These Old Charms ranks fourth in national sales, just a few records behind Michael Buble’s It’s Time.
Sokyrka ranked second behind Bruce Springsteen’s Devils & Dust, for best-selling new release in Canada.
“Unbelievable,” said Sokyrka when reached on her cell phone while camping in Red Deer. “It’s an amazing sense of accomplishment.”
Such sales numbers are promising for an indie artist, says Ron Spizziri, general manager of CFCR Radio.
Despite the exposure last year on Canadian Idol, Spizziri says Sokyrka may not be top of mind for music buyers outside Saskatchewan. Further, Sokyrka lacks the backing of a major label, which would include national newspaper, magazine and television advertisements.
“To do 11,000 (units) without the backing of a major label, that’s very impressive,” said Spizziri. “Most indie artists are lucky to sell 5,000. Most indie bands only get 1,000 (albums) printed and will never sell that.”
Matt Smallwood, director of sales at MapleNationWide, echoed Spizziri’s assessment in a statement released Wednesday.
“Theresa has worked very hard to achieve these amazing sales. We’re all very proud of her accomplishments,” said Smallwood.
“Being able to attain this level of success on a self-released record is a real cause for celebration.”
These Old Charms boasts the jazz-infused sounds that impressed Canadian Idol judges last summer and includes three songs written by Sokyrka. Cruisin’, Good Mother, Come Away with Me and God Bless this Child will be familiar to Idol watchers. The debut single, Turned My Back, was penned by Sokyrka.
Despite her achievements, Sokyrka keeps busy performing. She performs later this month as part of the Lieutenant Governor’s Centennial Gala at Credit Union Centre. Sokyrka will appear at the Saskatchewan Jazz festival in June and will tour this summer with a new band.
Kindest regards,
