Rapist targets 91-year-oldSearch is on for attacker after 'disturbing' assault on senior in her apartment bedroom
By JON WILLING
A 91-YEAR-OLD Nepean woman was raped last week after a man wandered into her third-floor apartment.
"I don't think it gets much more disturbing than this," Det. Gina Rosa of Ottawa police's sexual assault child abuse unit said yesterday.
Without a detailed descrïption of the suspect or an exact timeframe, police are appealing to the public for any information about this disturbing sexual assault.
Rosa wouldn't specify exactly where the woman lives, but she said the apartment building is off Baseline Rd. in the north section of Nepean.
Police first learned of the incident last Sunday when sexual assault detectives attended the Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus to see the woman.
Investigators believe the assault happened two to three days before the hospital visit.
UNLOCKED APARTMENT
The investigation so far indicates a man entered the unlocked apartment without knocking sometime in the afternoon. He didn't say a word as he picked her up and carried her into her bedroom, where he sexually assaulted her. He then silently left the apartment, leaving the woman in the bedroom.
The woman told her niece about the incident at least a day later and they went to the hospital.
Rosa said the apartment building isn't a seniors' complex. It has a controlled front entrance and it's not known how the attacker gained entry to the building.
"For all she knows, it could be somebody who lives in the building," Rosa said. "Given her age, you can appreciate that there's a lot of stuff difficult for her to describe."
Police have a vague descrïption of the attacker. They believe he's white and 20-40 years old. He has dark hair and he was wearing dark pants when the incident happened.
Detectives have been combing their files to determine whether there's anyone in the area who would fit the profile of the attacker. Rosa said it's been at least 10 years since the police force has seen a suspect who has tendencies of sexually assaulting seniors.
Police also have been checking out the area for clues.
The woman lives by herself, but has family in Ottawa.
"She's an amazing lady and she's handling this quite well," Rosa said, noting that the incident is "imprinted" on the victim's mind.
Al Loney, executive director of the Council on Aging of Ottawa, said seniors should be safe in their own homes.
"It's a horrible situation when someone who is that age is victimized in that way," Loney said. "It's just incredible anyone would think that was appropriate or acceptable." He urged seniors who are worried about their home's security to call police for a free assessment.
Anyone who can help police solve the sexual assault can call Rosa at 613-236-1222, ext. 5759 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-TIPS (8477).
