Anna Nicole Smith retrouvée morte

L'ancienne playmate et star de la télé-réalité Anna Nicole Smith, 39 ans, a été déclarée morte après avoir été emmenée dans un hôpital de Floride jeudi après-midi. Elle a été retrouvée inconsciente plus tôt dans une chambre du Hard Rock Hotel and Casino d'Hollywood vers 13h38.

C'est une infirmière privée au service de la star qui a alerté les services d'urgence. À 13h45, le garde du corps d'Anna Nicole lui administrait des manoeuvres de réanimation cardio-respiratoire. Elle a été ensuite transportée d'urgence dans un hôpital. Ce n'est toutefois qu'à 14h41 qu'elle a été déclarée morte par les médecins. On ne connaît pas encore les circonstances de son décès. Sa petite fille n'était pas avec elle au cours des dernières heures. Une autopsie sera pratiquée sur la dépouille de la star vendredi.

Anna Nicole Smith était impliquée dans plusieurs imbroglios judiciaires notamment concernant la paternité de sa fille.

Le photographe Larry Birkhead affirme être le père biologique de Dannielynn, la fille de Smith qui est née en septembre dernier aux Bahamas. Anna Nicole Smith prétend plutôt que son compagnon actuel, Howard K. Stern, est le véritable géniteur de la petite. Birkhead s'était adressé aux tribunaux pour ordonner à Smith et à sa fille de subir un test de paternité.

Par ailleurs, le fils de Nicole, Daniel Smith, est décédé en septembre dernier alors qu'il rendait visite à sa mère trois jours après qu'elle ait donné naissance à la fillette. Une enquête est toujours en cours aux Bahamas pour éclaircir les circonstances de cette mort mystérieuse. À l'époque, un pathologiste privé avait conclu que Daniel Smith était mort suite à l'absorption d'un mélange de méthadone et de deux anti-dépresseurs.

Au cours des dernières années, sa longue bataille judiciaire avec le fils de son mari décédé, l'ancien magnat du pétrole texan J. Howard Marshall, avait également fait les manchettes.

Elle avait épousé l'homme de 89 ans en 1994, alors qu'elle n'avait que 26 ans. Ce dernier est mort un an plus tard.

Après une longue bataille judiciaire, Anna Nicole a remporté en mai 2006 devant la Cour suprême une victoire judiciaire l'autorisant à revendiquer une partie de la fortune de son défunt mari.

Anna Nicole Smith, de son vrai nom Vickie Lynn Hoga, est née à Mexia, au Texas, le 28 novembre 1967.

Elle a également été consacrée playmate de l'année en 1993 par le magazine Playboy.

Anna Nicole Smith has died in Florida, her attorney confirmed Thursday.

Ron Rale said he did not know the cause of death and was waiting for the results of an autopsy, which is expected to happen Friday.

Sources say Smith was rushed to the hospital after being found unresponsive in her hotel room at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., where she was staying with her companion, Howard K. Stern.

"At 2:49 this afternoon we were advised by hospital personnel that Anna Nicole Smith died," Seminole, Fla., police Chief Charlie Tiger told reporters. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."

Her 5-month-old daughter, Dannielynn Hope, was not with them, sources say, but is being cared for in the Bahamas by the mother of Shane Gibson, a high-ranking Bahamian official who is a close friend of Smith's.

Stern, with whom she exchanged vows in a commitment ceremony on Sept. 28, "is just devastated," Rale says. "He can't speak."

Before learning of Smith's death, Rale told PEOPLE, "She hasn't been well the past few days, she's had cold and flu symptoms."

According to Access Hollywood, she was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital shortly after 2 p.m. ET on Thursday.

On Wednesday, a Los Angeles judge had ordered Smith, 39, and her 5-month-old daughter Dannielynn Hope to submit to a DNA test by Feb. 21. The test is tied to a paternity lawsuit filed by photographer Larry Birkhead, who claims he is Dannielynn's father. Smith's companion, Howard K. Stern, is listed as the infant's father on her birth certificate.

After the news of Smith's death, an emergency hearing was scheduled to occur in Los Angeles on Friday regarding the paternity of Dannielynn Hope, PEOPLE reports. Birkhead's attorney, Deborah Opri, wants to take a DNA swab from Smith's corpse, which Rale calls "the lowest form of behavior I've ever heard of."

Anna Nicole Smith had been enjoying a vacation weekend at the Hard Rock Hotel. According to Julianne Carelli, the public relations and advertising manager at the hotel, Smith checked in on Monday night and was due to check out Friday.

Carelli says Smith was a "frequent guest" and celebrated her last birthday at the hotel and casino and filmed a TrimSpa video there.

"We're shocked," Kathleen Hart, who is married to Donald Hart, Smith's stepfather "during her growing-up years," tells PEOPLE. "We're just in shock. On the heels of Danny's death, it is hard to deal with."

And Playboy founder Hugh Hefner said in a statement to CNN: "I'm very saddened to learn about Anna Nicole's passing. She was a dear friend who meant a great deal to the Playboy family and to me personally. My thoughts and prayers are with her friends and loved ones during this difficult time." Smith was a Playboy Pet of the Month in 1992 and a year later was the magazine's Playmate of the Year.

Smith also rose to fame modeling for Guess jeans. "This is a very tragic and sad day," the company's CEO, Paul Marciano, said in a statement. "Personally I feek she did not recover from the loss of her son Daniel who was the love of her life." And in an interview with CNN, he said "she had something magic."

Divorced as a teen, widowed at 27, and now dead at 39, Anna Nicole – or Nikki, as people in her hometown of Mexia, Texas, first called her – lived a life worthy of a soap opera.

When she was only 17, she married 16-year-old Billy Smith, who worked with her at Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken. The short-lived marriage produced a son, Daniel, who, after his parents' divorce, was left by Anna Nicole with her mother, Virgie Hart, while she scraped together a living as a single mother.

Fiercely driven, Anna Nicole in 1991 sent nude photos of herself to Playboy, which featured her as 1992's Miss May. That led to a Guess jeans contract and a ticket out of Mexia.

Also in 1991, she met billionaire oilman J. Howard Marshall II at a Houston men's club where she was working as a stripper. They wed in 1994. She was 26; he 89.

When Marshall died 13 months later, Smith found herself locked in a vicious battle with his son, E. Pierce, over a $1.6 billion estate. E. Pierce died in June 2006, but the fight continued after a May 2006 decision in which the U.S. Supreme Court allowed Smith to pursue her suit in Federal Court.

While her behavior – on her eponymous E! reality show and in her appearances as a spokesmodel for TrimSpa – was often labeled outlandish, no one ever doubted that she was a loving mother to Daniel.

The holidays were particularly important to her. "I don't have any good memories from Christmas when I was a girl," Smith told PEOPLE in 2004. "So I tried to make them special for Daniel. We never missed a trip to the mall to see Santa to take pictures."

But on Sept. 10 of last year, the unthinkable happened. Daniel, then 20, died suddenly in a Bahamas hospital room, three days after his mother had given birth there to a to 6-lb. 9-oz. daughter.

The death sent a shattered Smith into seclusion, despite her joy at the birth of her new child, Dannielynn Hope. "She's overwhelmed," her Bahamian attorney, Michael Scott, told PEOPLE shortly after the tragedy. "She's trying to come to grips with the depths of her despair."

Dr. Cyril Wecht, a private coroner hired by the Smith family, told PEOPLE that Daniel's death was the result of a lethal combination of medications including methadone, Zoloft and Lexapro. The death will be investigated by a Bahamian court in an inquest due to begin March 26, Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez tells PEOPLE.

But after Daniel's passing, Smith's story only got more complicated. On Sept. 26, Smith's U.S. attorney and confidant, Howard K. Stern, 38, announced on Larry King Live that he was Dannielynn's father – despite a paternity claim by Los Angeles photographer Larry Birkhead, 34.

Then, on Sept. 28, Smith and Stern held a commitment ceremony on a catamaran off the coast of the Bahamas' Paradise Island.

By late October, Smith was ready to talk about Daniel, telling TV's Entertainment Tonight, "I don't understand why God took him and didn't take me." She also said of daughter Dannielynn, "She looks like Daniel."

But life showed no signs of calming down. This week, Smith and TrimSpa were sued in a class-action lawsuit alleging their marketing of a weight-loss pill was false or misleading, and on Wednesday a judge ordered that Smith and Dannielynn submit to a DNA test to determine the infant's paternity.

But even before this week's developments, the drama had clearly taken its toll. Entertainment Tonight correspondent Mark Steines, writing on the show's Web site, said that when he interviewed her in October, she seemed different than she had when he'd met her in the past. "She seemed calmer, sadder," he wrote. "A bit broken, yet she looked quite beautiful."
