Canadian Idol nominated for two Gemini Awards

Updated Wed. Aug. 29 2007 9:47 AM ET

Eye on Idol

Remember how awesome Canadian Idol was last year? Well, so does The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, hosts of the annual Gemini Awards.

Announced on Tuesday, August 28, the nominee list includes two nods for Canadian Idol Season 4, which was broadcast in the summer of 2006 and culminated with the coronation of winner Eva Avila. The nominations are in the categories for best music/variety program/series and best cross-platform project (idol4.ctv.ca).

Supervising producer Mark Lysakowski was particularly thrilled to learning of the show's Gemini nods.

"It is always great to be recognized by your peers for your work," said Lysakowski, who is named on the nomination alongside executive producers Barb Bowlby and John Brunton and senior producer Sue Brophey. "It is going to be a tough competition this season as we are in the company of some great shows."

But, he adds, the show's production team has a greater goal than winning awards.

"As important as the Gemini awards are within the television industry our most important audience is still the Canadian public and we are always thankful our audience is watching week after week."

This isn't the first time the team behind Canadian Idol has been celebrated at the national event. In 2005 (Season 2), the show was nominated in the best comedy/variety program category, as well as best interactive website and most popular website. Idol.ctv.ca managing to take home the latter award over competitors cornergas.com, cityline.ca, and designu.tv.

The site was also nominated for "most popular" for Season 1 and Season 3.,

While winners of the vast majority of Geminis are decided by the votes of Academy members, the most popular website award will be chosen based on user votes in an online poll. (To help put idol.ctv.ca in the running this year, cast your vote now!)

The Gemini nominations are part of a massive haul for CTV and its specialty channels this year -- 103 in total.

All nominees in Idol's "best music/variety program" category are other CTV shows, including the 2006 MuchMusic Video Awards, the 2007 JUNO Awards, Canadian Idol, Live at the Rehearsal Hall (Bravo!) and Video on Trial "80s Special" on MuchMusic.

This year's televised awards ceremony will be held Oct. 28 in Regina. The industry gala (where the website-related awards will be handed out) will take place in Toronto on Oct. 15, 16 and 17.
