Before meeting his "soul mate," Pete Wentz found himself in a difficult period of his life during the winter of 2005, having recently swallowed an excess amount of anxiety medication only to have family persuade him to go to the emergency room. The accidental death of actor Heath Ledger in January 2008, however, provided Pete with an abrupt wake-up call that, "Man, this is not going to end up good." Additionally, the timing of the singer's decision to alter his way of living coincided with the start of his relationship with fellow singer Ashlee Simpson-Wentz whom he eventually married in May 2008. "It made me want to be a better person," explains Pete in the December issue of Details. He adds,
"I've had a thing for that girl for a really, really long time."
In Chile with his band Fall Out Boy, Pete received a phone call from Ashlee with the exciting news that she was pregnant with their first child. Thousands of miles apart, but determined to share the moment together, Ashlee e-mailed Pete a photo of her positive pregnancy test, a moment Pete recalls to be less-than-perfect timing! "I was like, 'Oh my God, this might be the worst possible time to have this conversation," says the 29-year-old, who was then busy with preparing for a show in Antarctica. However, despite the initial shock -- as Pete reveals the pregnancy was "a happy accident" -- the new dad-to-be was confident that the unexpected twist was simply another motivator to live his life right.
"I was definitely scared, just thinking, 'This is something that's going to exist for the rest of your life and you can't f-ck it up. But I think that certain things happen for a reason in your life and maybe it was time to put the wild child in a cage."
Welcoming their son Bronx Mowgli on November 20th, Pete -- who is full-swing into daddy duty -- now looks forward to the future with his family of three. "Now, with the baby, I want to be the best dad I can be," explains Pete. For the proud father, famous for his coyness with the press, that includes turning down the countless offers for a reality show. "I get pitched, like, Newlyweds 2 once a week, dude. For like ... Move-to-an-island-after-this money. I just can't do it," admits Pete.
