L’AFI publie la liste des 100 meilleures répliques

Marlon Brando figurait parmi les candidats, mais c'est cette réplique bien sentie de Rhett Butler à Scarlett O'Hara dans Gone With the Wind (Autant en emporte le vent), tourné en 1939, qui l'a emporté: «Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn». Les deux personnages étaient interprétés par Clark Gable et Vivien Leigh.
L'American Film Institute a dressé sa liste annuelle des 100 réparties les plus marquantes de l'histoire cinématographique américaine, liste qui a été diffusée mardi sur les ondes du réseau CBS.

Marlon Brando a eu droit aux citations numéros deux et trois, pour le célèbre «I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse», dans The Godfather (Le Parrain), et son «I coulda been a contender», dans On the Waterfront (Sur les quais).

Le personnage de Dorothy Gale interprété par Judy Garland arrive en quatrième place avec «Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore», du Wizard of Oz (Le Magicien d'Oz). Le numéro cinq revient au «Here's looking at you, kid», lancé par Rick (Humphrey Bogart) à Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) dans Casablanca.

Le producteur de ce spécial de l'AFI, Bob Gazzale, s'attendait d'ailleurs à ce qu'une réplique de Casablanca chapeaute la liste, colligée à partir des bulletins de votes expédiés à 1500 cinéastes, comédiens, critiques de cinémas et autres à Hollywood. Mais une fois tous les votes comptés, la riposte de Rhett Butler est devenue incontournable, a expliqué M. Gazzale. Casablanca a quand même récolté le plus grand nombre de mentions, soit six citations.

Deux autres répliques de Gone With the Wind figurent dans les 100 meilleures: «After all, tomorrow is another day», (en 31e position), et «As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again» (59e rang), toutes deux déclinées par Mme Leigh.

«Go Ahead, make my day», envoyé par Clint Eastwood dans Sudden Impact, et «May the Force be with you», prononcé par Harrison Ford dans Star Wars, se retrouvent dans les dix répliques les plus mémorables des productions américaines, aux côtés des mots de Gloria Swanson dans Sunset Boulevard, Bette Davis dans All About Eve et Robert De Niro dans Taxi Driver.
