DIEPPE - Elle est jeune, belle, a une voix incroyable. La grande gagnante du concours télévisé Canadian Idol 2006, Eva Avila, se glisse dans le show-business tout naturellement. Elle touche enfin à cet ailleurs dont elle rêvait depuis l'enfance.
La chanteuse de Gatineau, qui a chanté pour la première fois en public à l'âge de 3 ans, en duo avec son père musicien de rue au Marché By à Ottawa, n'aurait pu prédire ce qui lui arrive aujourd'hui. Et pourtant, elle en rêvait depuis longtemps. Le titre de son premier album, Somewhere Else, qu'elle a choisi elle-même, a un lien avec son nouveau rythme de vie. La musique a ce pouvoir de permettre aux gens de s'évader, confie-t-elle.
"Je suis enfin ailleurs où j'ai toujours voulu être, c'est-à-dire vers une carrière à l'échelle internationale. Je me vois un petit peu comme un papillon qui se promène partout et qui explore", déclare Eva Avila, au cours d'une entrevue, lors de son passage à L'Acadie NOUVELLE, à Dieppe.
Depuis Canadian Idol, Eva Avila a changé de style de vie. Elle habite maintenant dans un appartement au centre-ville de Toronto, se plie à des horaires chargés et voyage à travers le pays. "Il y a beaucoup de sacrifices à faire, puis ce n'est pas reposant, mais j'ai toujours voulu faire ça et j'étais prête à faire le plongeon", affirme la jeune chanteuse déterminée.
Immédiatement après la finale de Canadian Idol, elle a commencé à travailler à la production de son album avec la maison de disques Sony BMG. Des artistes de renom, dont Cyndi Lauper, Chantal Kreviazuk et Raine Maida, ont collaboré à ce premier opus. À la musique pop, elle intègre diverses influences: R&B, latine et soul. Son copain, Chad Doucette, de la Nouvelle-Écosse, aussi finaliste à Canadian Idol, chante sur deux de ses chansons.
Avant Canadian Idol, elle n'arrivait pas à vivre de sa musique. Eva Avila confie qu'elle était une de celles qui critiquaient ce genre de concours.
"Je voulais tout sauf un feu de paille. Puis, le matin des auditions, à Ottawa, j'ai eu une espèce d'intuition. Je me suis dit: je vais y aller pour le fun, on verra ce que ça donne, mais je n'avais pas d'attente", raconte Eva Avila, qui ajoute avoir vécu le plus bel été de sa vie. Comme quoi il y a juste les fous qui ne changent pas d'idée.
Un jour, elle aimerait chanter ses propres chansons, faire un disque en français et un autre en espagnol. Comme son père péruvien chantait en cinq langues, elle a toujours écouté plusieurs styles de musique à la maison.
"C'est mon père qui m'a appris à chanter, c'est lui ma plus grande inspiration", ajoute la chanteuse, qui partira en tournée en 2007, avec des escales dans les Maritimes, en mars, possiblement à Moncton, à Fredericton et à Saint-Jean. Les dates seront annoncées sur son site Web dans environ une semaine.

HALIFAX – Eva Avila’s eyes seem to light up when you mention East Chezzetcook, and the seaside community’s favourite son, Chad Doucette.
“I haven’t been there yet,” said this season’s Canadian Idol winner, who is dating her former competitor on the TV show.
“It’s my first time here, and I haven’t had time to go. But I might come back for the holidays; I am going to get a two-week break.”
It will be the first real time off the 19-year-old from Gatineau, Que., has had since being crowned this summer. In the last few moths, she’s been busy recording her first album and performing at events — like the Grey Cup last weekend.
“Ooh, the water,” she said, after getting her first look at Halifax Harbour yesterday morning. She was in town promoting her debut CD, Somewhere Else.
“I’m officially a recording artist, which is what I’ve always wanted to be. I was always working toward it, but it was never really happening.”
Her desire to be a musician started when she was a child, watching her Peruvian father perform as a street music in Ottawa’s Byward Market. She first performed with him on a sunny summer day she was three years old.
“I just decided to grab the mike and start yelling in it. My dad thought it was funny, like, ‘Ah, she wants to sing.’ So, he took me to the market and I sang a song in Portuguese. I was yelling into the mike. I don’t know what I was singing.”
Her dad also had a studio in the family basement, where Avila would record herself singing eclectic song mixes, such as The Phantom of the Opera theme and the Ace of Base’s ’90s classic Don’t Turn Around.
“I’ve always wanted to make the kind of album where there are no two songs that sound alike,” Avila said. “They are diverse. It’s a big combination of different influences I’ve always really liked.”
It features Meant to Fly, the Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida-written pop ballad Avila sang moments after getting the Idol title. The album also includes This Kind of Love, which was written and produced by ’80s she-bopper Cyndi Lauper.
“She was fun to hang out with. She had me doing jumping-jacks in the studio,” said Avila. “She is a wild child.”
Rob Wells — who has worked with the Backstreet Boys and Nick Lachey — also contributed songs and produced the album, which combines everything from soul to hip-hop and pop.

Eva Avila est en plein milieu d'une tournée de promotion qui va l'amener à parcourir tout le pays. Ses petites journées sont composées de 15 entrevues et ses plus grosses de 30.
Telle est la vie de la gagnante de la dernière édition de Canadian Idol. Oui, il faut battre le fer pendant qu'il est chaud et Eva Avila vient de lancer son premier album, un truc qui a été conçu en trois semaines. Et en même temps, on annonçait qu'elle fera une tournée du Québec à l'hiver.
«C'est essoufflant, mais ça va bien, explique la Gatinoise de 19 ans. Non, je n'ai pas le temps de respirer mais bon, ce qui arrive est ce à quoi j'ai toujours rêvé. Vraiment, je serais bien mal venue de me plaindre.»
Car oui, Eva Avila l'admet candidement: tout a changé depuis le 17 septembre, date où elle a été couronnée à Canadian Idol. Vraiment tout. À commencer par l'endroit où elle vit.
«Je vis maintenant à Toronto, une ville que j'aime parce que ça bouge, parce que ça bouge énormément. Je dis ça mais, en même temps, je ne connais pas beaucoup la ville. Écoute, je n'ai vraiment pas passé beaucoup de temps dans mon nouveau chez nous depuis que j'y suis installée. C'est pas compliqué, ça n'arrête pas.»
Mais elle le répète: elle ne s'en plaint pas. «Je suis comme un poisson dans l'eau. Quand j'ai chanté l'hymne national au match de hockey des Sénateurs, l'autre fois, j'ai trippé. Et quand j'ai chanté l'hymne national au match de la coupe Grey, le week-end dernier, j'ai encore trippé. Parler aux journalistes, j'aime ça aussi. Même s'il y a des sacrifices à faire, c'est tellement beau ce qui m'arrive!»
Ironiquement, Eva admet qu'elle était loin d'être une fan des concours du genre Canadian Idol ou Star Académie, il n'y a pas si longtemps. Non, le principe de faire des vedettes instantanées avec des inconnus ne lui disait pas grand-chose.
«Quand j'entends les gens critiquer, ça m'amuse. Ça m'amuse parce que moi aussi, j'ai critiqué en masse! Et Canadian Idol, je ne voulais pas le faire. Ce sont mes parents et mes amis qui m'ont poussée. Mais avec tout ce que j'ai appris au cours des derniers mois, je suis très, très heureuse d'être passée par-dessus mes préjugés.»
Eva Avila n'a rien écrit ni rien composé des 13 chansons qui se retrouvent sur Somewhere Else. Mais c'est elle qui a choisi toutes les pièces. Et ça, elle ne veut pas qu'on le lui enlève.
«Choisir les chansons, c'était quelque chose d'important pour moi, affirme-t-elle. Car vois-tu, je considérais primordial que l'album ait ma couleur, qu'il me ressemble. Et les gens de Sony m'ont laissé beaucoup de latitude par rapport à ça.»
Ses choix ont été guidés par l'odeur de la scène. Il fallait qu'elle s'imagine les chanter sur scène pour qu'elles passent la rampe. «Je rêve de partir en tournée, de chanter partout, et il fallait que je sois à 100 pour cent confortable avec chacune des pièces que je choisissais. Fallait que ça m'accroche, fallait que ça groove.»
La jeune chanteuse a eu la chance de travailler avec du grand monde, comme Cyndi Lauper et Chantal Kreviazuk. Pas mal, en effet, pour une artiste encore inconnue l'été passé.
«Je suis chanceuse et je le sais. Côtoyer une artiste comme Cyndi Lauper, c'est un privilège. Elle est flyée, mais elle est tellement brillante, elle est tellement généreuse. J'espère qu'on va se revoir.»
Mais pourquoi avoir choisi 13 pièces en anglais? «C'est simplement une question de temps. J'ai eu trois semaines et demie pour tout faire et l'album devait sortir le 14 novembre. Mais je vais chanter en français, tu peux l'écrire. Et peut-être que le prochain album sera 100 pour cent en français.»
Oui, Eva Avila a hâte de partir en tournée. À compter de la mi-février, elle donnera trois spectacles chez elle, à Gatineau, deux à Montréal, deux à Québec, et un à La Baie, à Trois-Rivières, à Drummondville, à Sherbrooke et à Granby.
«Je veux qu'il y ait de l'énergie dans mon show, je veux qu'il y ait de l'ambiance, souligne-t-elle. Je veux jaser avec le monde, je veux qu'on s'amuse. Des spectacles sans être rémunérée, j'en ai donné plein chez moi, en Outaouais. Et c'est à une belle tournée comme celle-là que je rêvais.»

popYOUlarity: What are your favourite things about being a Canadian artist? What might be your not-so-favourite things about being a Canadian artist?
Eva: I think it is amazing to be able to represent. I think we have a really beautiful and amazing country. I feel really privileged because the music industry in Canada is growing, and a lot of Canadian artist are making their way outside of Canada. I think it is an honour to be associated with that. This is the industry I have always wanted to be in and to do it in Canada; ultimately I want to have an international career but to start it Canada is big.
popYOUlarity: What about your not so favourite thing?
Eva: One thing I find kind of sad is that I’m an urban girl. I love hip hop and eventually want to do hip hop, and the hip hop/ R&B market is not very big in Canada. That’s bad because that is pretty much where I want to go. In the US it is big, which is good, because I want to explore outside of Canada as well and I will be able to do that one day.
popYOUlarity: How do you feel you've changed or grown since before Canadian Idol until now?
Eva: I am a lot stronger than I think I though I was. I can be a pretty fragile person if I don’t get enough sleep, if there is too much pressure on me, or I miss my family and friends. All summer I thought I was going to crack, but I did not. I guess what is stopping me from cracking, and what is keeping me alive, is the great passion I have for music. That passion is what is keeping me going. This is something I have wanted so bad that nothing can stop me now. The non-stop hectic schedule that we had at Idol seems sane compared to my new schedule. It seemed that we were always on the go, and we never had a chance to breathe, but I was handling the stress with no problem. It surprised me because it was always learn a song, them perform it. After I won I did not get a chance to rest. It was like you win, you get confetti, but you now have three and a half weeks to make an album.
popYOUlarity: Those initial sessions that you sat down and started the album, what was that like?
Eva: There was a lot of pressure because the album had to be out November 14, which is pretty good timing. There is still the momentum of the Idol win, and it is just before Christmas, which is perfect for us. It was a lot of pressure because everything had to be done by a certain date. I could not get sick, I could not be ‘I’m not up for it.’ There were days when my stomach hurt, or I was not feeling good, and I did not feel like singing but I had to because of the deadlines; that was a little hard. The producer and the engineer I worked with were so much fun that it did not feel like work. We ended up recording the album in three and a half weeks, which is insane, but I am really proud of the final product. I got to pick each and everyone of the songs that are on the album. It is pretty representative of me in the amount of time that we had to record it. It is pretty much what I have always wanted to do, which is a mix of different styles.
popYOUlarity: What would you say is the hardest lesson that you’ve learned so far in the entertainment industry?
Eva: Probably that it is not all pretty, pink, glam and the full star treatment. It is a lot of hard work. I have been prepared my whole life because I have known I have always wanted to do this. I did not know when or how it was going to happen for me. Now that I am living it, it is totally different. There are a lot of sacrifices to be made. For example I am getting no time off until Christmas. I have not had any time off since the beginning of Canadian Idol, which was May or June. I could not even go see my best friend on her 20th birthday, which is a big deal because it was her 20th birthday, and it was the most important thing to her and I could not be there. I knew that I would have to sacrifice a lot, like always being on the road. I miss my family, my cat, my brother, my home, my friends, but I have always known that it was going to happen. It is only when you are going through it that you realize what a sacrifices you make. That is hard but I have always wanted to do this so I cannot be complaining. Yeah it is tiring, and there is a lot going on, but it is my life long dream and I will not let myself complain.
popYOUlarity: When you go into a song and sing a song, does the song just tell you how to sing it? Or, is it something you have to work on?
Eva: During recording I could do what ever I wanted with a song. That was what was so cool about this whole process because I had a lot of input. I got to pick my songs and sit down with the producer Rob Wells, who is amazing. He was so great to work with because he wanted my ideas and my input and we were even able to change the instruments on the track if we wanted. If we wanted to tweak parts on the melody he wanted my ideas about that kind of stuff. I had a lot of say and was able to sing the songs my way, which is what we had to do with Canadian Idol. In Canadian Idol we would have to take a song, make a cover of it, and make it our own and as unique as possible. These songs on the album were already written for me and I had to learn it but I could play around with it because it is my song. For future albums I want to do some writing, but because of the limited time for this album I did not have any chance to do any writing for this album. For the next album I would like to write, and work on my piano playing, and maybe write something for piano, or just play the piano.
popYOUlarity: Tell me a little bit about the concept that you had going in or if you even had a concept going in.
Eva: Well the concept was “hurry up!” (laughs) We were so rushed to get the record done, but at the same time it was fun because the songs were so good. I would get CD’s with 20 songs on them everyday and I would have to pick. I had to pick my absolute favourites because we had no time to go back if I picked a song, recorded it then did not like it. In the end we did 18 songs and 13 made it on to the record. Most of the songs I knew I wanted to record as soon as I heard them, and I was like this is totally me. My next single has a latin influence, and you can totally dance to it. It is called ‘I own it all to you’ and it is totally me and my sound. I am really happy with all the writing because they got my style right away. I wanted Nelly Furtado meets Natasha Beddingfield meets Alicia Keys, like a mix of everything. The result was amazing.
popYOUlarity: How else do you get through low emotional periods other than music?
Eva: I listen to other people’s music. What helps my now, because I am so far away from my family and friends. I just like to call them, just hearing their voice and talking to them. My mom is so supportive, my dad too. My dad is the more excited one of the two. My mom is more about telling me to rest, and call her when I can. She’s not one that says I have to call her every day. She knows I’m happy, so she is happy.
popYOUlarity: Does your sudden fame ever frighten you?
Eva: It frightens me in the sense that I have new magic friends who are calling me up and who are telling people how close we are. Any connection people can find to me they use. I can’t say that it is insulting, but it is hurtful cause people are taking advantage of me getting to live my life long dream to make themselves feel more important. It is just a little weird. My close real friends are the ones that do not need to tell people that they are my friends. These are some of the prices to pay in becoming famous. It is not like I am scared like I’m Michael Jackson when people were throwing themselves at him. We’re in Canada where that does not really happen that much. It is like you are under a microscope all the time. Even during Idol people would talk about us.
popYOUlarity: The music industry right now is so driven by image-- how do you feel about that?
Eva: It is pretty sad. I have always been one to see a video and say ‘Do you need to show your boobs and your stomach?” I have always told my friends that I will not do that, and that I will never use my image to sell records. I want to sell records passed on the music, not on how I look. I want to bring something new to the music industry and not do the same thing as everyone else. You have to be a little pop and mainstream to be a success. The truth is that you have to be pretty to be popular. It is can be a little hard for people who have an amazing voice but are not as good looking as others so they are not as popular which is sad.
popYOUlarity: Do you still find it weird to constantly be talking about yourself now?
Eva: In a narcissistic kind of way I don’t like it, but it is kind of fun. I am used to it you know, doing press and interviews is fun and I like it. I don’t feel like I am repeating my self. I have always been the type of person who likes to tell the same story to different people and repeating myself. My dream is coming true what’s not to like about it?
popYOUlarity: At this point, what do you think has made you stronger than ever?
Eva: Probably the love and support from the fans and my family. My family and friends have known me forever, so their support is different then the support from the fans. Without my family I would not be how I am, or where I am in my career. When fans show their support for me it is great because it is why I am here doing this. popYOUlarity: What are your favourite things about being a Canadian artist? What might be your not-so-favourite things about being a Canadian artist?
Eva: I think it is amazing to be able to represent. I think we have a really beautiful and amazing country. I feel really privileged because the music industry in Canada is growing, and a lot of Canadian artist are making their way outside of Canada. I think it is an honour to be associated with that. This is the industry I have always wanted to be in and to do it in Canada; ultimately I want to have an international career but to start it Canada is big.
popYOUlarity: What about your not so favourite thing?
Eva: One thing I find kind of sad is that I’m an urban girl. I love hip hop and eventually want to do hip hop, and the hip hop/ R&B market is not very big in Canada. That’s bad because that is pretty much where I want to go. In the US it is big, which is good, because I want to explore outside of Canada as well and I will be able to do that one day.
popYOUlarity: How do you feel you've changed or grown since before Canadian Idol until now?
Eva: I am a lot stronger than I think I though I was. I can be a pretty fragile person if I don’t get enough sleep, if there is too much pressure on me, or I miss my family and friends. All summer I thought I was going to crack, but I did not. I guess what is stopping me from cracking, and what is keeping me alive, is the great passion I have for music. That passion is what is keeping me going. This is something I have wanted so bad that nothing can stop me now. The non-stop hectic schedule that we had at Idol seems sane compared to my new schedule. It seemed that we were always on the go, and we never had a chance to breathe, but I was handling the stress with no problem. It surprised me because it was always learn a song, them perform it. After I won I did not get a chance to rest. It was like you win, you get confetti, but you now have three and a half weeks to make an album.
popYOUlarity: Those initial sessions that you sat down and started the album, what was that like?
Eva: There was a lot of pressure because the album had to be out November 14, which is pretty good timing. There is still the momentum of the Idol win, and it is just before Christmas, which is perfect for us. It was a lot of pressure because everything had to be done by a certain date. I could not get sick, I could not be ‘I’m not up for it.’ There were days when my stomach hurt, or I was not feeling good, and I did not feel like singing but I had to because of the deadlines; that was a little hard. The producer and the engineer I worked with were so much fun that it did not feel like work. We ended up recording the album in three and a half weeks, which is insane, but I am really proud of the final product. I got to pick each and everyone of the songs that are on the album. It is pretty representative of me in the amount of time that we had to record it. It is pretty much what I have always wanted to do, which is a mix of different styles.
popYOUlarity: What would you say is the hardest lesson that you’ve learned so far in the entertainment industry?
Eva: Probably that it is not all pretty, pink, glam and the full star treatment. It is a lot of hard work. I have been prepared my whole life because I have known I have always wanted to do this. I did not know when or how it was going to happen for me. Now that I am living it, it is totally different. There are a lot of sacrifices to be made. For example I am getting no time off until Christmas. I have not had any time off since the beginning of Canadian Idol, which was May or June. I could not even go see my best friend on her 20th birthday, which is a big deal because it was her 20th birthday, and it was the most important thing to her and I could not be there. I knew that I would have to sacrifice a lot, like always being on the road. I miss my family, my cat, my brother, my home, my friends, but I have always known that it was going to happen. It is only when you are going through it that you realize what a sacrifices you make. That is hard but I have always wanted to do this so I cannot be complaining. Yeah it is tiring, and there is a lot going on, but it is my life long dream and I will not let myself complain.
popYOUlarity: When you go into a song and sing a song, does the song just tell you how to sing it? Or, is it something you have to work on?
Eva: During recording I could do what ever I wanted with a song. That was what was so cool about this whole process because I had a lot of input. I got to pick my songs and sit down with the producer Rob Wells, who is amazing. He was so great to work with because he wanted my ideas and my input and we were even able to change the instruments on the track if we wanted. If we wanted to tweak parts on the melody he wanted my ideas about that kind of stuff. I had a lot of say and was able to sing the songs my way, which is what we had to do with Canadian Idol. In Canadian Idol we would have to take a song, make a cover of it, and make it our own and as unique as possible. These songs on the album were already written for me and I had to learn it but I could play around with it because it is my song. For future albums I want to do some writing, but because of the limited time for this album I did not have any chance to do any writing for this album. For the next album I would like to write, and work on my piano playing, and maybe write something for piano, or just play the piano.
popYOUlarity: Tell me a little bit about the concept that you had going in or if you even had a concept going in.
Eva: Well the concept was “hurry up!” (laughs) We were so rushed to get the record done, but at the same time it was fun because the songs were so good. I would get CD’s with 20 songs on them everyday and I would have to pick. I had to pick my absolute favourites because we had no time to go back if I picked a song, recorded it then did not like it. In the end we did 18 songs and 13 made it on to the record. Most of the songs I knew I wanted to record as soon as I heard them, and I was like this is totally me. My next single has a latin influence, and you can totally dance to it. It is called ‘I own it all to you’ and it is totally me and my sound. I am really happy with all the writing because they got my style right away. I wanted Nelly Furtado meets Natasha Beddingfield meets Alicia Keys, like a mix of everything. The result was amazing.
popYOUlarity: How else do you get through low emotional periods other than music?
Eva: I listen to other people’s music. What helps my now, because I am so far away from my family and friends. I just like to call them, just hearing their voice and talking to them. My mom is so supportive, my dad too. My dad is the more excited one of the two. My mom is more about telling me to rest, and call her when I can. She’s not one that says I have to call her every day. She knows I’m happy, so she is happy.
popYOUlarity: Does your sudden fame ever frighten you?
Eva: It frightens me in the sense that I have new magic friends who are calling me up and who are telling people how close we are. Any connection people can find to me they use. I can’t say that it is insulting, but it is hurtful cause people are taking advantage of me getting to live my life long dream to make themselves feel more important. It is just a little weird. My close real friends are the ones that do not need to tell people that they are my friends. These are some of the prices to pay in becoming famous. It is not like I am scared like I’m Michael Jackson when people were throwing themselves at him. We’re in Canada where that does not really happen that much. It is like you are under a microscope all the time. Even during Idol people would talk about us.
popYOUlarity: The music industry right now is so driven by image-- how do you feel about that?
Eva: It is pretty sad. I have always been one to see a video and say ‘Do you need to show your boobs and your stomach?” I have always told my friends that I will not do that, and that I will never use my image to sell records. I want to sell records passed on the music, not on how I look. I want to bring something new to the music industry and not do the same thing as everyone else. You have to be a little pop and mainstream to be a success. The truth is that you have to be pretty to be popular. It is can be a little hard for people who have an amazing voice but are not as good looking as others so they are not as popular which is sad.
popYOUlarity: Do you still find it weird to constantly be talking about yourself now?
Eva: In a narcissistic kind of way I don’t like it, but it is kind of fun. I am used to it you know, doing press and interviews is fun and I like it. I don’t feel like I am repeating my self. I have always been the type of person who likes to tell the same story to different people and repeating myself. My dream is coming true what’s not to like about it?
popYOUlarity: At this point, what do you think has made you stronger than ever?
Eva: Probably the love and support from the fans and my family. My family and friends have known me forever, so their support is different then the support from the fans. Without my family I would not be how I am, or where I am in my career. When fans show their support for me it is great because it is why I am here doing this. I am so grateful for the fans that voted for me for Canadian Idol because without them I would not be here.

La chanteuse de Gatineau est montée sur scène hier entourée de ses musiciens pour interpréter une poignée de chansons, dont ses succès Meant to Fly et I Owe It All to You. La gagnante de Canadian Idol a chanté avec ses tripes devant une salle enthousiaste.
Elle a rendu un court hommage à son père, présent dans la salle, grâce à qui, a-t-elle rappelé, elle a chanté petite devant un public pour la première fois.
Mini-spectacle
Ce mini-spectacle avait pour but de faire connaître en chair et en os la chanteuse, qu'on a suivie au populaire concours télévisé. Eva donne ce soir une présentation semblable à Toronto, où des représentants de CTC et Canadian Idol assisteront.
«C'est un beau party pour célébrer le lancement de mon premier album, Somewhere Else, et pour donner un avant-goût de mon show», a signifié Eva.
Déjà 40 représentations
Eva était hier entourée de ses cinq musiciens, des gars de Toronto que son gérant lui a récemment présentés, en espérant que la chimie opère: «Je suis tombé amoureuse de chacun d'eux», affirme simplement la chanteuse. Ces cinq musiciens devraient constituer l'orchestre qui la suivra partout au Canada lors des 40 dates de spectacles prévues.
Avant le mois de mai dernier, Eva Avila, 19 ans, était inconnue du grand public, outre dans son patelin natal. Sa carrière démarre sur les chapeaux de roues. Elle se dit néanmoins prête à se lancer parce qu'elle travaille dans ce but depuis l'âge de trois ans: «Je suis comme un poisson dans l'eau, a révélé la jeune femme peu avant son showcase d'hier soir, mais pas mal stressée. Ça fait longtemps que je n'ai pas performer live.»
La chanteuse monte son spectacle, qu'elle souhaite plein d'ambiance, chaleureux et intime, et commencera les répétitions en janvier. Elle veut que les gens s'y amusent et que, entre le public et elle, le courant passe.
Eva entreprend sa tournée pancanadienne d'une quarantaine de dates au Métropolis de Montréal le 14 février. Elle sera à Sherbrooke le 16, à Drummondville le 18, chez elle, à Gatineau, les 20 et 21 février, à Québec le 24, à Trois-Rivières le 27, à Granby le 28 et à La Baie le 1er mars. Eva donnera des spectacles jusqu'en avril coast to coast.

Eva Avila aura 20 ans le 25 février, tout juste deux jours avant le spectacle qu’elle présentera à la salle J.-Antonio-Thompson de Trois-Rivières. Et pourtant, c’est de la santé qu’elle se souhaite pour 2007. Voilà un voeu auquel elle n’aurait jamais pensé, n’eût été d’une année 2006 qui l’a propulsée dans un joyeux tourbillon depuis sa victoire à Canadian Idol. De la santé donc, qu’elle désire, et un autre petit souhait, celui d’«être capable de maintenir le succès que j’ai en ce moment», sourit-elle.
Assise dans un petit café de Trois-Rivières, la jeune femme est au beau milieu d’un marathon qui a débuté en septembre avec les honneurs du grand concours canadien.
Depuis, Eva Avila a enregistré son premier album en moins d’un mois, elle a parcouru le Canada de Vancouver à Moncton en deux semaines à des fins de promotion, a étiré cet exercice deux semaines de plus consacrées au Québec seulement, et s’est arrêtée pour deux journées de congé le week-end dernier, le temps d’attraper une grippe.
Dès janvier, elle travaillera à la conception du spectacle de sa première tournée qui débutera le 14 février. Or, si tout va vite, elle réalise ses rêves et trouve l’aventure exaltante. Ceci dit, la jeune femme a beau déguster son succès au présent, elle conserve en mémoire quelques craintes qu’elle avait avant l’aventure Canadian Idol.
«J’étais dans le même bateau que tous ceux qui critiquent les concours. Je ne croyais pas à ça. Je ne croyais pas que c’était la façon d’arriver au succès et j’avais peur de retomber aussi vite que l’éclair.»
Le matin de l’audition, elle a néanmoins décidé d’y aller tout de go, sur l’élan d’un curieux pressentiment, dit-elle. Et depuis, elle a changé d’opinion sur la suite possible de ce type de concours. «Rendue au point où j’en suis, ce sera ma responsabilité de maintenir le succès actuel», considère-t-elle. «En entrant dans ce milieu, j’ai vu à quel point je suis prête à plonger et à faire ce métier qui est très exigeant.»
Depuis l’âge de 3 ans qu’elle foule les planches, elle en récolte aujourd’hui les fruits. «Je crois qu’il faut se connaître en tant que personne et en tant qu’artiste pour être prête et je me considère très choyée d’avoir toute l’expérience que j’ai maintenant, à l’aube de mes 20 ans.»
Le spectacle, pour se faire connaître
Pour l’album qui compte 13 pièces regroupées sous le titre Somewhere else, elle avait des attentes bien précises à communiquer à son entourage professionnel.
«Je leur ai donné une liste des chansons que j’adore, de mes influences musicales. Je voulais éviter le quétaine, les ballades d’amour prévisibles», dit-elle. «Je ne voulais pas quelque chose de provoquant non plus, ce n’est pas mon style, mais je voulais quelque chose qui me ressemble en tant que fille très urbaine.» Et surtout, elle voulait des chansons qu’elle prendrait plaisir à faire sur scène.
Sur la panoplie de chansons composées expressément pour elle par des auteurs d’un peu partout à travers le monde, la jeune interprète a procédé par élimination et s’est dite heureuse du choix qui lui a été offert. Aujourd’hui que le tout est gravé sur CD, elle se sent choyée, mais demeure incapable d’avoir le recul nécessaire pour juger convenablement du résultat. «L’accueil est très bon. Je me fis aux gens et je ne reçois que des bons commentaires... Quand j’ai reçu la copie complète, ça m’a fait très bizarre.»
Pour le spectacle qu’elle présentera en 2007, elle sait tout aussi précisément ce qu’elle souhaite. «Je veux une ambiance intime, chaleureuse. Je veux que les gens voient à quel point je suis normale, avec mes petites manies bizarres. Je veux que les gens ressentent davantage mon énergie et qu’ils voient que je ne suis pas seulement une fille qui chante bien. Je suis aussi sociable. Avec le spectacle, je veux toucher les gens et je veux aussi qu’ils s’amusent. J’ai le goût d’interagir avec eux. Un jour, j’aurai la grosse «patente» avec les jeux de lumières, et moi qui sort du plancher», rigole-t-elle. «Mais je veux y aller graduellement.»
Dans dix ans, au moment de célébrer ses 30 ans, elle se verrait volontiers à Los Angeles, à tourner son premier film, rêvasse-t-elle, après avoir fait une tournée internationale avec ses albums en trois langues. «Je rêve d’une carrière internationale et je veux exploiter mon background multiculturel.»
En attendant, elle compte savourer son temps des fêtes comme jamais, «en famille, entre amis, en pyjama. Je veux me reposer et flâner. Je dois faire le plein d’énergie pour 2007!».•
