THE ONES
(Ely)
You're not the one I thought you were going to be
You're not the one I thought my heart would see
You're not the one who fell in love with me
No you're not the one
(JV)
I'm not the one who's making you warm inside
I'm not the one who's waiting to the side
I'm not the one standing by your side
No I'm not the one
(Ely)
You think I'm just a friend
Somebody to talk to
Can't you see
I want more
'cause you are the one
You are the one
Doesn't matter how hard I try
There's just no way to avoid this love of mine
'cause you are the one
You are the one
I'd climb the highest mountain
To tell the world you are the one
(JV)
You're not the one who's waiting like a fool
You're not the one who's breaking all the rules
You're not the one who stands with a chance to lose
No you're not the one
(Ely)
I'm not the one who makes your dreams all right
I'm not the one who's keeping you up all night
I'm not the one who wakes up by your side
No I'm not the one
(JV)
You think I'm just a friend
Somebody to talk to
Can't you see
I want more
'cause you are the one
You are the one
It doesn't matter how hard I try
There's just no way to avoid this love of mine
'cause you are the one
You are the one
I'd climb the highest mountain
To tell the world you are the one
(En duo)
We are the ones (x3)
'cause we are the ones
We are the ones
It doesn't matter how hard we try
There's just no way to avoid this love of ours
We are the ones
We are the ones
Let's climb the highest mountain
To see the world as one
(Ely)
Ah… ah… ah…
(En duo)
We are the ones

I am stupidly passionate about music, it has become a bit of drug. I buy tons of CDs and spend days listening to each and every one, putting notes on every song to know which tracks are good so that when I do my little MP3 collection I know which songs to include. It makes my wife Johanna crazy, but it's cheaper than having a thing about buying watches or stuff like that. It's not a passing interest. If you love music, it remains forever. My album Private Paradise, which is released internationally on Feb 19, started life in parallel with my time in Formula One.
I bought a guitar in 1996 when I started racing in F1, and began writing songs. Finally, last year, after I left BMW Sauber mid-season, I decided to rent a studio and have a go at recording them professionally to see how they would sound. Then the goal was to release the music.
Ask me about the challenge of becoming as good at music as I am at motorsport, and I have to say: my career has been racing and I don't plan on music becoming my next career. A career brings obligations. You have to be slightly politically correct, you have to bend over backwards to please people here and there, so my plan is to keep it a professional hobby. If I can reimburse my investment in recording the album, and buying the equipment from the studio, that would be good enough. Of course, the more sales there are, the happier I will be, because the more you put your soul, time and effort into a project, the more successful you want it to be.

The album has 13 songs, four in French and nine in English. I wrote six, and another track was co-written with my sister Melanie. That's a song about our dad, Gilles. She started to write it after his death in practice for the Dutch Grand Prix in 1982, and I finished it a few years ago. Our collaboration is a very special moment for us, and it's the only personal song on the album.
The other half is made up of songs from friends, people I like, and who I thought should be out there. There's also a cover of a great song, a French-Canadian song, a few duets (one with Melanie and two others with young French-Canadian artists Ely and Amelie Veillev). I also got my 14-year-old sister Jessica to sing a small part on one track.
We released the first single at the Canadian Grand Prix last year, a French-Canadian song called Accepterais-tu? It wasn't a full release, but it was very well received. Since then it's all happened extremely fast. It was a bit of a surprise to see how slow the music industry moves compared to motor racing, so we kind of made everyone work faster than they were used to, which was both fun and a bit of stress.
There were a couple of really special moments making the album. The first thing is that, partly through the 24-hour charity ski race in Villars, I became friendly with Steve Smith, the vocalist from house music trio Dirty Vegas. He was so excited to hear I was in the studio in Paris recording this album that he jumped on a train and helped us out with backing vocals and instruments. The other memorable moment came when we went to England to record with the Tenebrae Choir. My producer Fred and I were sitting in the church with tears in our eyes - it was amazingly moving.
Unlike motor sport, I didn't get into music for the live performances. I like writing and studio work and seeing how a song can come to life. Performing comes with the music, but I'm not doing a lot of it, just a bit for charity and the launch. I'm not a singer and I don't have the training, so it just has to remain fun, like a jam session. I don't get nervous when I get on stage because not being a singer allows me to make mistakes.

Si c'est un tirage au sort, ça veut dire que je peux écrire un mauvais commentaire sur la chanson et pouvoir gagner quand même ?
