Judge: Polanski must return to US

A Los Angeles judge said tonight fugitive film director Roman Polanski must return to the US to be sentenced in a decades-old sex case.

Polanski’s lawyers are likely to appeal against Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza’s ruling.

Lawyers for Polanski, 76, say he should be sentenced in abstentia to time already served after pleading guilty in 1978 to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.

But prosecutors insist Polanski must appear in a Los Angeles court and not be permitted to manipulate the justice system.

Polanski is under house arrest in his Swiss holiday home.

Polanski, arrested on a US warrant, spent more than 60 days in a Swiss jail before being transferred to house arrest on December 4.

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp are hoping to keep a 'low profile' while shooting new movie The Tourist in Venice.

The Hollywood stars will arrive in the Italian city next month to film with director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck and producer Graham King.

King said he wanted disruption to residents kept to a minimum during shooting but it could prove difficult.

He told UK newspaper the Daily Mail: 'We're going to try to keep a low profile, but that might be difficult with two of the world's biggest stars making a film together.

'And if Brad comes too, the three of them will become a tourist attraction in their own right.'

They’ve been talking about remaking 1930s classic“ A Star is Born” for years – well, rather, remaking it for a third time since it’s already been done a few times (the last time in the 70s with golden duo Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson). I remember at one stage Will Smith was supposedly attached to it, Jennifer Lopez too, and Beyonce was even in talks for it at one stage. And on the director’s side, Joel Schumacher was most recently attached to the project.

Now, according to Deadline Hollywood Daily, “Notebook” and “My Sister’s Keeper” director Nick Cassavettes (previously an actor – you’ll remember him in “Facebook”) has shaken hands with the WB in an effort to get the long-gestating project off the ground.

The studio are said to be chasing Robert Downey Jr for the lead (at least we know he can sing!), and if he passes, “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm may get the offer.

On the other side of the coin, long-time fave Beyonce is said to be still on the studio’s radar, whilst Alicia Keyes and Rhianna are waiting in the wings if the Bootilicious musician declines.
